How to Tell If Your Steering Rack Is Failing
Steering problems are unnerving, and the steering rack is a common culprit. This guide runs through the tell-tale signs of a failing rack, how to tell it apart from a failing pump, and what your options are.
The main signs of a failing steering rack are: power steering fluid leaks, knocking or clunking over bumps, heavy or inconsistent steering, play or vagueness on-centre, and a whine that rises with steering effort. One symptom alone may be something else (a pump, a track rod end, low fluid); several together point to the rack. Any sudden loss of steering control needs immediate attention.
The tell-tale symptoms
| Symptom | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Fluid leak under the car | Rack seals failing (hydraulic racks), the classic early sign |
| Knocking over bumps | Worn rack mounts or internal wear, a common MOT/NCT flag |
| Heavy or stiff steering | Loss of hydraulic assistance, which could be the rack or the pump |
| Play / vague on-centre | Internal wear in the rack, or worn track rod ends |
| Whine that rises when turning | Often the pump; sometimes the rack. Check the fluid first |
| Uneven tyre wear | Steering or alignment issues that can accompany rack wear |
When to stop driving. Sudden heavy steering, a loud bang followed by loss of assistance, or any sense that the steering is not responding needs immediate attention. Stop safely and get it checked. Steering is a safety-critical system; do not gamble with it.
Rack or pump?
- Leaks and knocking point to the rack.
- A whine that tracks engine speed and steering effort points to the pump.
- Heavy steering can be caused by either the rack or the pump.
- Running the system low on fluid can damage parts, so it is worth diagnosing properly rather than guessing.
- See our power steering pump repair page for the pump side.
What to do next
1. Check your power steering fluid level and look for leaks.
2. Note when the symptoms happen: cold start, low speed, over bumps, or when turning.
3. Get it diagnosed. A garage can confirm whether it is the rack, pump, or something simpler.
4. If it is the rack, a reconditioned exchange rack is usually the best-value fix.
