Turbo Replacement Cost in Ireland

Turbo replacement can be one of the bigger repair bills a driver faces but the range is wide, and a reconditioned unit changes the maths completely. Here is what drives the cost and how to keep it sensible.

Reconditioned turbochargers at Driveshaft Ireland with a note on replacement cost

Turbo replacement cost depends on your make and model, whether you fit a new OE turbo or a reconditioned/remanufactured exchange unit, and the labour to fit it. A reconditioned VSR-balanced exchange turbo is typically a large saving on a new OE turbocharger, which is why it is the route most Irish drivers take. We price the unit to your exact vehicle; fitting is separate. There is no single price for a turbo because a small diesel car turbo and a commercial van turbo are very different parts. What follows is what actually moves the number, so you can read a quote with confidence.

Cost factors

What drives the cost

FactorEffect on price
Make, model & engineThe biggest factor because turbos vary widely by vehicle and engine.
New OE vs reconditionedA remanufactured exchange turbo is typically far cheaper than new OE.
Variable-geometry vs fixedVGT/VNT turbos and electronic actuators are more involved than simple fixed turbos.
Actuator only?Sometimes it is the actuator, not the whole turbo, which is a cheaper fix if diagnosed correctly.
Fitting & related partsLabour, oil feed/return pipes and filters are separate and important for reliability.

Why reconditioned/remanufactured? Typically a substantial saving against a new OE part, for a like-for-like rebuilt unit. Remanufactured to specification and function-tested before it leaves us. Supplied on exchange, so it is usually the fastest way to get you back on the road. Backed by a warranty, with the term confirmed when you order.

Don't forget the cause: Because most turbos fail from an oil-supply or breather problem, a proper job includes replacing oil feed/return lines and filters and clearing the cause. Skipping this to save money often costs far more when the replacement fails. Factor it into any cost comparison.

Your options

New, reconditioned or actuator-only?

Three routes, three cost profiles:

  • Reconditioned exchange turbo. Usually the best value: VSR-balanced, tested, warranted and well below new OE.
  • Actuator replacement. If only the actuator has failed, this can be a much cheaper fix. Diagnose first.
  • New OE turbo. The most expensive route, rarely necessary when a quality reconditioned unit is available.
  • Weighing recon against new in general? See Reconditioned vs new vs used: which should you buy?
Pricing

How we price it

We do not quote a flat price because it depends on your exact vehicle. Most parts are supplied on an exchange basis, where your old unit comes back to us, which keeps the cost down.

The price depends on the make, model and specification, whether it is a straight exchange or a repair of your own unit, and the parts involved. Current prices for stocked units are shown on the product pages.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much does it cost to replace a turbo in Ireland?
It depends on your vehicle and whether you choose new or reconditioned. A remanufactured exchange turbo is typically a large saving over a new OE unit. Send us your make, model and reg for a firm price.
Is a reconditioned turbo much cheaper than new?
Yes, a VSR-balanced remanufactured exchange turbo is usually well below the price of a new OE turbocharger, and it is function-tested and warranted.
Could it be just the actuator?
Sometimes, yes. A failed electronic actuator can mimic turbo failure and is a cheaper fix. Correct diagnosis avoids replacing a turbo that does not need replacing.
Does your price include fitting?
Our price is for the unit, supplied on exchange. Fitting labour and related parts, including oil pipes and filters, are separate but essential for reliability. We can advise what the job involves.
