Reconditioned steering racks on a shelf at Driveshaft Ireland with a note about repair cost

Steering rack reconditioning is the process of stripping, inspecting, replacing worn internals (seals, bearings, valve components) and rebuilding a steering rack back to its original working specification. Driveshaft Ireland supplies reconditioned and remanufactured racks on an exchange basis - function-tested, warranted and delivered nationwide — for a substantial saving against a new OE rack.

What's covered

What the service covers

A failing steering rack leaks, knocking, heavy or vague steering does not always mean an expensive new part. Reconditioning restores your rack (or supplies a remanufactured exchange unit) to full working order for a fraction of the cost of new. This page explains what the service involves and how to get a price.

Why reconditioned

Why reconditioned or remanufactured?

A rebuilt rack does the same job as new, for a fraction of the price here's what you're getting.

Common symptoms

Signs your steering rack needs attention

Fluid leaks

Power steering fluid leaks — drips under the car, dropping reservoir level.

Knocking or clunking

Over bumps, or a rattle through the wheel.

Heavy or stiff steering

Stiff or inconsistent steering, especially when cold.

Play or vagueness

Vagueness on-centre, or the car wandering.

Whining noise

Rises with steering effort — often the pump, sometimes the rack.

A rack rarely fails overnight the symptoms build. Not sure it's the rack? Read How to tell if your steering rack is failing for a full symptom guide, or see the Road Safety Authority's car maintenance checks for general steering and fluid checks between services.
